Wendy Buonaventura is a dancer, choreographer and writer. Her work explores cultural myths about women, with a focus on the arts. Serpent of the Nile: Women and Dance in the Arab World (Saqi) was an Observer Book of the Year. She was on the programme of the Bath Literature Festival, talking about her subsequent book I Put A Spell On You: Dancing Women from Salome to Madonna (Saqi): ‘Buonaventura’s theatrical flourish never deserts her in her bravura leaps through history… The breadth of her knowledge is apparent in every gem of an anecdote’ (Daily Telegraph). Her stage shows combining text, dance and music have been performed at the Paris Institut du Monde Arabe and London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre. The TV documentary about her, Making Mimi, can be found on her website and on You Tube. Her BBC Radio 4 series Dances With The Devil was chosen as Pick of the Day and Choice of the Week. Other radio appearances include ‘Woman’s Hour’ and ‘Off The Page’. She has recently created a cabaret using material from her latest book Dark Venus: Maud Allan and the Myth of the Femme Fatale (Amberley).
